As the cooler months roll in, so does the cold and flu season. But staying healthy doesn’t have to be complicated! With a few simple steps, you can boost your immune system and keep yourself feeling your best. If you do end up catching a bug, don’t worry – I’ve got some great tips for a speedy recovery, too!
Boost Your Immunity Naturally
Eat Nutrient-Dense Foods
What you put on your plate can make a big difference. Focus on colorful fruits and veggies like leafy greens, citrus, and berries for a boost of vitamins and antioxidants. Immune-supporting foods like garlic and onions are great additions due to their natural antiviral properties.
Stay Hydrated
Water is essential for keeping your immune system running smoothly. If you’re not a fan of plain water, warm herbal teas or water with a squeeze of lemon are great alternatives.
Support Your Gut
A healthy gut plays a big role in your immune function. Include probiotic-rich foods like yogurt, kefir, or fermented veggies like sauerkraut in your diet, and add prebiotic foods such as garlic, onions, oats, cooked apples and plums to nourish the good bacteria in your gut.
Prioritize Sleep
Sleep is when your body repairs and recharges. Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night to support your immune system. A relaxing bedtime routine, like a warm bath or reading, can help ensure you get the rest you need.
Exercise in Moderation
Moderate exercise, like walking or gentle yoga, can boost your circulation and support your immune health. However, if you're feeling unwell, rest is more important than pushing through a workout.
Recovery from Cold or Flu
If you do catch a cold or flu, there are natural ways to speed up your recovery:
Rest, Rest, Rest
Rest is critical when you're sick! Your body needs time to heal, so take it easy. Stick to easy-to-digest, nutrient-rich foods like soups and broths that soothe while providing immune-boosting ingredients like ginger, turmeric, and garlic. There is a good reason we associate homemade chicken soup with getting better!
Stay Hydrated
Staying hydrated becomes even more important when you're fighting off illness. Warm herbal teas, (such as Harmonic Arts Breathe, available at Infinity) can help support your immune system and ease congestion or sore throat symptoms.
Try Natural Remedies
If you’re feeling congested, try using essential oils like eucalyptus or peppermint in a diffuser or steam inhalation. Raw honey is also a great natural remedy for soothing a sore throat and calming coughs.
By focusing on whole, nourishing foods, proper hydration, restful sleep, and moderate movement, you can give your immune system the boost it needs to stay strong during cold and flu season. If you do get sick, trust in your body’s ability to heal – with a little natural support, you’ll be back on your feet in no time!
